Water-Critical Industries
The water-friendly location for water-critical industries...
Climate change means that water is likely to become an increasingly critical resource. Through Northumbrian Water, water-dependent manufacturers in the Tees Valley have access to the UK’s premier water supply, supported by the huge Kielder Water Reservoir. Northumbrian Water has never imposed water restrictions in the Tees Valley and does not expect to have to.
Surface water like Kielder’s is naturally soft, unlike the underground aquifer supply in many areas. Northumbrian Water supplies in two grades (partially treated and potable) and is eager to offer quality tailored to individual customer requirements in a consultancy-based industrial partnering agreement.
If the steady, secure, cheap and abundant supply of water is mission-critical to your business look no further than Tees Valley.
Whatever your operational uses for water - in product, process, safety or hygiene - there is simply no better set up in the UK. We have the resource, the experience and the expertise to welcome relocating or expanding businesses that find their current or planned operations potentially restricted by tightening legislation, the risk of environmental impact or concerns about climate change.

New legislation, new threats
The Water Resources Act 1991 controls the abstraction and impounding of water. Recent significant changes to the current legislation are due to be phased in during 2005/6. The main changes that may affect you include:
- Revocation of unused or environmentally damaging licences
- New provisions for third parties to pursue claims against abstractors
- Increased Environment Agency powers to acquire information
If current abstraction levels continue or grow, these changes will increase the revocation of licences where water is scarce. Tees Valley’s abundant water resource ensures water users are much less exposed to the risk of tightening legislation.
Effluent and waste treatment - World class facilities in Tees Valley
The Tees Valley’s effluent and waste treatment resources are amongst the most advanced in the UK. Investment in the infrastructure is continuous - in 1995 work began on a new, centralised effluent and sludge treatment centre to service the needs of industry and the population of Tees Valley. The plant at Bran Sands - winner of four environmental awards - provides effluent treatment for major multinational companies in the vicinity.
Northumbrian Water can advise Tees Valley companies on all aspects of water and waste treatment, solid and liquid disposal, recycling and special waste management.
Bran Sands is a fundamental part of the £200m Tees Estuary Environment Scheme (TEES), providing a sustainable, modern industrial and municipal waste treatment facility for Tees Valley. The facility is capable of treating over 300,000 cubic metres of effluent per day and has the best and most cost effective techniques for a diverse range of effluent treatment.
We are confident that the Tees Valley has the capacity to cost-effectively handle all of your current and future waste water and effluent treatment needs.
No area in the UK is better equipped to handle the treatment of waste and effluent of all kinds.
